Celebrating Wednesday the 13th in genre-slashing style are the 3Speeds and Apocalypso. First on, the 3Speeds (in their seasonal incarnation, 3Speed Sleigh) tear the wrapping off some Christmas chestnuts and roast them over the open fire of their punk rock flailing. Besides the Christmas songs of Slade, Ramones and the Damned, they have an original, “(I’m Waiting For) The Other Ball (To Drop)”, their paean to dreading the New Year. And their re-working of the Bay City Rollers’ “Saturday Night”, renamed “Hanukkah Nights”, has eviscerated audiences for 3 years running. Sing-along caroling books will be on hand for, well, singing along! Band members are Matt Wyatt (guitar, vocals), Gene Brodeur (drums), Eddie Blau (bass, vocals), and Chris Wyatt (guitar, vocals).
Next onstage is steel pan/ubermetal outfit Apocalypso. Rhythmic banging coupled with left-field arrangements describe this un-pigeon-hole-able band, which features Calypso T (steel drums), Gnasty Gnick (bass), Larry “The Unspeakable Axe” Marotta (electric guitar), and Shane “Skydiver” Willis (drums). Columbus Alive called them “the sounds of a cruise ship headed straight to Hell”, and The Other Paper wrote: “They did a ton of whacky stuff superbly, from the classical classic “Sabre Dance” to Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song”. They describe themselves this way: “We were all fans of the Caribbean beat, and with our irrepressible urge to play Black Sabbath, we formed this band.” They have promised to include some Christmas tunes in their set, and state that “ Drinks are on us (if you throw ‘em at the stage)”!
