Natalie’s presents the Elliot Scozzaro Quintet in a special tribute to the music of Benny Golson. Band members are Elliot Scozzaro (alto saxophone), Conner Eisenmenger (trombone), Joey Skoch (piano), Andy Woodson (bass), and Jim Rupp (drums).
Scozzaro is a saxophonist and educator who graduated with a Master of Jazz Studies degree from the University of North Texas, where he played lead alto saxophone in the seven time Grammy-nominated One O’ Clock Lab Band. He was named a semi-finalist in the North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Competition in 2016, and has performed at the Rochester Jazz Festival, Lewiston Jazz Festival, and the Columbus Jazz and Ribs Festival. An active freelancer, Scozzaro has led groups and performed as a sideman at venues spanning from New York City to Dallas, and has studied with Brad Leali and Dr. Michael Cox.
This performance will focus on music written by and associated with tenor saxophonist Benny Golson from the mid 1950’s to the early 1960’s. Some of these compositions were recorded by Benny, while others were made famous by such musicians as Miles Davis, Paul Chambers, and Clifford Brown. Benny’s compositions are known for their lyrical melodies, distinctive harmonic motion, and often deceptively complex forms. Golson’s career started in the bands of Bull Moose Jackson, Lionel Hampton, and Earl Bostic, and he went on to perform and write for Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey before creating his own group, the Jazztet (with trumpeter Art Farmer). Recently, he has given lectures and clinics at dozens of universities around the United States and has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Mellon Living Legend Legacy Award.
