Gospel Soul Brunch: Eddie B Sands, Jr: Tribute to James Cleveland
Hosted by Debra James Tucker
- This event has passed.
The Gospel Soul Brunch Series continues with a special tribute to the music of James Cleveland featuring vocalist Eddie B. Sands, Jr. At the age of 12, Eddie performed in the James Cleveland Youth Choir, and was trained under Michael Malone, founder of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, DC, where he honed his skills as a professional singer. Eddie has shared the stage with a number of major recording artists, and has also appeared in numerous theatrical productions, both in starring and support roles. James Cleveland, the King of Gospel music, was a driving force behind the creation of the modern gospel sound by incorporating traditional black gospel, modern soul, pop, and jazz in arrangements for mass choirs.
The unique sound of vocalist Debra James Tucker is a product of extensive training in jazz, classical and gospel music. She is the writer/performer of the one woman show Survival of the Boulevard Singer—winner of an Ohio Arts Council Award for Individual Excellence, has been visiting instructor at Denison University in the history of African American Gospel Music, and an artist in residence with a number of youth arts organizations.
