Streetlight Guild presents an encore performance of “The New Black Eastside Songbook,” a six-song suite conceptualized by Columbus writer Scott Woods, featuring new music composed by Counterfeit Madison, Paisha Thomas,  Krate Digga, The Ogun Meji Duo (Mark Lomax and Eddie Bayard), and Jordan Sandidge. “The New Black Eastside Songbook” is an exploration of black life and culture in Columbus historically and now, touching on subjects ranging from local jazz legends and privilege to the police and gentrification. It interrogates the definition of Columbus culture, and what relationship such culture might have to the people who both create and partake of it. Utilizing some of Columbus’ brightest musical talent across a variety of styles and backgrounds, this work seeks to establish a bar for the marriage of political context and musical examination, adding new bricks to the foundation of whatever Columbus culture may entail.

Scott Woods was the creator of the 2017 award-winning arts series “Holler: 31 Days of Columbus Black Art.” He is the author of “Urban Contemporary History Month,” “We Over Here Now” and “Prince and Little Weird Black Boy Gods.” He has been featured multiple times in national press, including multiple appearances on National Public Radio. He was the president of Poetry Slam, Inc. and is the co-founder of the Writers’ Block Poetry Night. In April of 2006 he became the first poet to ever complete a 24-hour solo poetry reading, a feat he bested seven more times without repeating a single poem. Scott was a recipient of the Columbus Makes Art Excellence Award for his work “Holler” at the Greater Columbus Arts Council’s 2017 Community Arts Partnership Awards.
